Placement Support vs. a “100% Placement Guarantee”: What IT Institutes in Kerala Can Honestly Promise

Scale weighing a cracked guarantee badge against a placement support checklist for IT courses in Kerala
In shortNo institute controls hiring. Here's what a 100% placement guarantee can really mean, what genuine placement support covers and what to ask before you enrol.

Walk past enough IT institutes in Kerala and you’ll see the same banner: 100% placement guarantee. It’s a comforting line when you’re a fresher about to pay a course fee. The trouble is that the institute isn’t the one doing the hiring. This post looks at what a promise like that can and can’t mean, what real placement support involves, and what to ask before you sign up.

Why a “100% placement guarantee” deserves a second look

Employers decide who gets hired. They look at skills, at how the interview went, and at whether they have an opening that month. No institute controls any of that, so a promise of 100% is a promise about something outside its hands.

Then there’s the word “placed”. It can mean a full-time developer role at a product company. It can also mean a three-month unpaid internship, a poorly paid job at a partner firm, or a position inside the institute itself. A percentage means little until someone tells you which of these it counts.

The maths can mislead too. Imagine a batch of 40 students. Only 25 meet every condition, such as full attendance and every assessment cleared, and 20 of those get offers. The institute can say 80% of eligible students were placed. Across the whole batch it’s 50%. Neither figure is false, but they tell very different stories.

Conditions are the other catch. Some guarantees apply only if you hit a minimum attendance, pass every test and accept the first offer that arrives, whatever it pays and wherever it is. Those lines tend to sit in the fine print, not on the banner.

Regulators have noticed this kind of claim. In November 2024, India’s Central Consumer Protection Authority released guidelines on misleading advertising in the coaching sector, which prohibit false claims such as 100% selection or 100% job security. They’re written with coaching centres in mind, so whether a particular IT institute falls under them is a question for a lawyer. Still, the direction is plain. Absolute promises about jobs attract scrutiny, and the Consumer Protection Act, 2019 covers misleading advertisements more broadly.

What placement support actually looks like

Placement support is the work that happens between the last class and the first offer letter. Done properly, it covers a lot of ground. A resume that says what you can do instead of listing every tool you’ve heard of. A portfolio and GitHub profile with projects an interviewer can open. Aptitude and coding practice. Mock interviews, technical and HR, with feedback you can act on. Communication practice, which freshers underrate until their first real interview. And introductions to companies that are hiring.

One part gets overlooked: what happens after a rejection. Good support means sitting down with the student, going through what went wrong and fixing it before the next interview. It’s slow, unglamorous work, and it helps more than any banner.

Support prepares you for interviews. A guarantee promises the result of them, which nobody can honestly do.

Questions to ask before you pay

How do you define “placed”? Ask for the role type, employment type and salary range, in writing if possible.

Can I see recent placement data? Company names, job roles and numbers by batch. A vague percentage tells you almost nothing.

Is any guarantee in writing, and what are the conditions? Ask about refunds too. If the answer changes depending on who you ask, take note.

Who gets placement support? Some institutes put their effort into top scorers. Find out whether average students get the same attention.

Can I talk to past students? Not the ones the counsellor picks. Look up alumni yourself on LinkedIn and ask what the process was really like.

How to check a placement claim yourself

You don’t have to take anyone’s word for it. Pick three or four names from the institute’s placement posts and look them up on LinkedIn. Do their profiles show the company and role that were advertised? Do they say how long they’ve been there? A real placement leaves a trail.

Next, search the company names. A small firm with no website, or one that appears in every placement post from the same institute, deserves a closer look. Ask whether students went through open interviews or were simply sent to a partner firm.

Finally, ask to sit in on a mock interview session or a demo class before you pay. An institute that’s confident in its process rarely minds. An hour there will tell you more than the brochure.

What to look for instead of a guarantee

A good sign is an institute that talks about process and shows evidence. Mock interview schedules. Placement records you can check. Straight answers when you ask what happens to students who don’t get an offer in the first few months. That kind of openness costs the institute something, since it gives up an easy headline, and that’s partly why it’s worth trusting.

Look at the course itself too. Placement support can’t fix a thin syllabus. If the tech stack is out of date or there are no real projects, no number of mock interviews will cover the gap.

Your side of it

Placement is a partnership, and the institute only covers half. The students who do well are usually the ones who build projects beyond the assignments, keep their GitHub active, practise interview questions out loud and apply widely without waiting to be sent. Support can point you in the right direction. You still have to walk it.

Choosing honestly

A banner is cheap to print. Evidence takes more effort to collect. Before you pay a fee, ask how “placed” is defined, ask to see real records and read what’s in writing. An institute that answers openly is telling you something useful, even when the answer is less exciting than 100%.
