Yes, it's possible to move into data science after a career gap. It isn't quick or guaranteed. Some interviewers will ask about the gap, and Kochi has fewer dedicated data scientist roles than analyst roles, so many people need a stepping stone. What helps most is recent, visible work you can point to. This guide covers what the Kochi job market looks like, how much a gap can cost you, and what to learn and build, in order.
What data science jobs in Kerala look like right now#
An Indeed snapshot of Kochi dated 8 October 2026 listed 43 data science openings. The biggest group was business analyst, with 16 openings, followed by data scientist with 10. Indeed's pay estimates come from postings over the previous 36 months and put the average data scientist in Kochi at about ₹8.7 lakh a year, business analysts at about ₹5.5 lakh and lead data scientists at about ₹13.7 lakh.
Treat those as estimates from postings, not offers. What freshers actually earn varies a lot with the type of company. Job titles are loose too: several listings under "Data Scientist" in that snapshot were trainer or teaching jobs, so read the job description as well as the title.
SQL appears in the skills listed for the business analyst, analyst and data scientist roles in the snapshot, and Python is listed for data scientists. A first job after a gap may well be an analyst role built around SQL and Excel, with Python added over time. Dedicated data scientist roles are fewer and can come a step later.
Data science after a career gap: how much does the gap cost?#
A gap does cost something. A field experiment on Indian hiring, discussed in a May 2026 Free Press Journal column, found that women with career breaks received 49 per cent fewer callbacks than equally qualified candidates with continuous work histories. The column adds that extra certifications earned during the break made no statistically significant difference to callbacks, and it attributes the penalty to employers' perceptions of commitment and adaptability. The study looked at women, so treat the figure as a sign of how some employers screen. It doesn't describe every employer.
Two practical points follow. A certificate alone didn't move callbacks in that study, so keep evidence a person can open and read: projects, a GitHub page, a short write-up of your analysis. And routes that skip the first filter can help, such as referrals, LinkedIn conversations, smaller companies and startups where a manager reads your work directly, and returnship or re-entry programmes.
Skills to learn, in order#
- SQL, first. It's the one skill that shows up across all three role types in the snapshot above.
- Python, mainly pandas, for cleaning and analysing data. Practise on messy real files.
- Statistics: distributions, sampling, hypothesis testing and regression, enough to tell whether a result is real or noise.
- A visualisation tool such as Power BI or Tableau, since the people reading your results usually don't write code.
- Machine learning basics, meaning supervised models and how to evaluate them, once the first four feel comfortable. It comes last because most openings in that snapshot were analyst roles.
Expect the sequence to take months. How many depends on where you start and how much time you can give it each week. If you'd rather follow a structured programme, Expertzlab runs data science training in Kochi and data analytics training in Kochi.
Start with analyst roles, then move up#
An analyst job gives you paid, recent experience for your resume, which is what a gap candidate lacks, and you can pick up modelling work from inside the role. For more on how the two roles differ, see our post on data analyst vs data scientist salary in Kochi and Kerala.
Build a portfolio that also explains the gap#
Aim for three finished projects. Each should state a question, name the data source, describe the method and end with a conclusion a non-technical reader can follow. Put them on GitHub with a clear README, and write a short LinkedIn post about each so recruiters can find them.
Then deal with the gap in one honest line near the top of your resume: what you were doing (caregiving, relocation, health, study, a business) and what you've done since to get back, such as those projects. Keep the dates consistent between your resume and LinkedIn. A gap stated briefly reads very differently from one an interviewer has to dig for.
Support available in Kerala#
Kerala has a programme for women in this situation. 10,000 Women Back to Career began as a pilot in 2024 under Women Inclusive in Technology (WIIT), and a September 2026 report describes it being scaled up with government, employers and voluntary organisations. Women can register their qualifications, experience, skills and aspirations on the ReIgnite Portal, which links them to training and job opportunities. Some larger employers run returnship programmes too, though the Free Press Journal column says their scale is still small next to the number of people who need them.
These programmes are aimed at women. If that doesn't describe you, the portfolio and the analyst route carry more of the weight. If you're changing fields as well as returning from a break, our guide to switching to IT from a non-IT background in Kerala is a related read.
FAQ#
Do I need a maths or computer science degree?
Some postings ask for a degree in computing or a related field, and others are flexible. Interviews test SQL, Python and statistical thinking. If you meet the skills but not the degree line, apply anyway and lead with your projects.
How do I explain the gap in an interview?
Keep it to a sentence or two, factual and without apology, then move to what you've built since. Show that your skills are current.
Can I work remotely from Kerala?
Sometimes, but most openings are on site. In the October 2026 Indeed snapshot, 11 per cent of data scientist openings in Kochi were remote or hybrid.
Is a certificate enough?
On its own, probably not. In the study discussed above, certifications earned during a break didn't significantly change callback rates. Pair any course with projects you can show.
Where to start#
If the callback figures above apply to you, expect to send more applications than someone with an unbroken record. Start with SQL, set a weekly study schedule you can keep, and put one finished project online before you send your first application.
