- The short version
A TIH IIT certificate is a genuine certificate of course completion, and it is not a degree. Both halves of that sentence matter, because most of the confusion comes from people who hear only one of them. Maybe a course has been pitched to you as coming from a TIH of an IIT. You probably want to know what you would hold at the end. This guide covers who issues the certificate and what Indian law says about degrees. It also shows how to describe the credential on a resume without overstating it.
What a Technology Innovation Hub actually is#
TIH stands for Technology Innovation Hub. The Department of Science and Technology (DST) set up 25 of them under the National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems. The mission was approved in 2018 with an outlay of ₹3,660 crore. Each hub sits at an academic or research institution and owns one technology area.
IIT Patna's hub, the Vishlesan I-Hub Foundation, works on speech, video and text analytics. IIT Palakkad's hub, the Technology I-Hub Foundation, works on intelligent collaborative systems. Both are registered as Section 8 companies, which are non-profit companies under the Companies Act, 2013. They are separate legal entities from the IITs they are hosted at.
Hubs run research projects, startup support and skill development. The certificate courses you see advertised belong to that last group.
When a TIH IIT certificate counts as valid#
"Valid" can mean two different things. One is whether the certificate is genuine, meaning the named hub really issued it for a programme you completed. Another is whether anyone is obliged to accept it as a qualification.
On the first meaning, a certificate is valid when the hub's name is on it and you met the programme's completion rules. Those rules differ from course to course, so ask for the attendance and assessment requirements in writing before you pay. You can also check that the hub appears on the DST list of 25.
On the second meaning, nothing obliges anyone. UGC's own FAQ says it does not specify diploma or certificate courses, and that equivalence of degrees for employment is decided by the employing organisation. So a TIH certificate gets no automatic weight. It works as evidence that you completed structured training, and an employer decides how much that evidence is worth.
Why a TIH certificate is not a degree#
Indian law keeps the power to grant degrees narrow. Section 22 of the UGC Act, 1956 limits who can award degrees. A university set up under a Central or State Act can. So can an institution deemed to be a university, or one that an Act of Parliament has specially authorised. IITs fall in that last group. Section 6 of the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961 lets each IIT hold examinations and grant degrees, diplomas and other academic distinctions.
A Section 8 company is none of those things. A hub can run a good course, but a certificate it issues cannot be a B.Tech, an M.Tech or any other degree. This is a plain-language reading of the law and not legal advice.
A course run by an IIT itself and a course run by its hub are different things. The certificate names whichever one issued it, so read the name printed on yours.
Here is how the two compare:
- Issued by: a TIH certificate comes from the hub, a Section 8 company. An IIT degree comes from the IIT, under the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961.
- What it is: a TIH certificate records completion of a course. An IIT degree is an academic qualification such as a B.Tech or M.Tech.
- Length: a TIH programme sets its own duration. An IIT degree takes several years.
- Accepted where a degree is required: a TIH certificate is not. An IIT degree is.
Where the certificate helps and where it does not#
A hub-linked certificate helps when you are changing fields or filling a skill gap. It shows you finished a structured programme at a government-funded hub, and the projects behind it give you something concrete to discuss in an interview.
It does not help where a degree is the stated requirement. A master's programme that asks for a degree will not take a certificate instead. The same goes for a job notification that lists a degree as the eligibility. Nor does the certificate promise a job, since hiring depends on what you can show.
For your resume, write the programme name, the issuing hub and the IIT it belongs to, and put it under certifications. Do not write "IIT certified" and do not list it under education next to your degree.
Questions to ask before you pay for a course#
Providers sometimes lean on the letters IIT and say little else. Four questions cut through that, and a good provider will answer them in writing.
- Whose name is printed on the certificate: the hub, the IIT, or the training partner?
- What exactly is awarded, a certificate of completion, a diploma or something else?
- What must you finish to receive it, such as attendance and assessments?
- What will you be able to show afterwards, such as projects or a capstone?

What this means for Expertzlab learners#
Expertzlab Technologies in Kochi is affiliated with both the IIT Patna Vishlesan I-Hub Foundation and the IIT Palakkad Technology I-Hub Foundation. Everything above applies to learners here. A hub-linked certificate is a credible record of training, and it carries the most weight next to projects you can demonstrate.
[FLAG: Writer input needed] Intent: state exactly which certificate an Expertzlab learner receives, and who issues it. Problem: the certificate wording and issuer for each course were not supplied. What would help: the exact certificate title and issuer for each course, and whether it comes from the hub, from Expertzlab, or from both.
Placement outcomes depend on your skills and effort, and a certificate does not change that. Our piece on placement support versus a placement guarantee explains what to look for when a course makes promises about jobs.
Frequently asked questions#
Can I write "IIT" on my resume if I did a TIH course?
Yes, as long as the wording is accurate. Name the programme, the issuing hub and the IIT it belongs to, and list it under certifications.
Will employers accept a TIH IIT certificate?
It depends on the employer, and no rule makes them accept it. UGC leaves equivalence decisions for jobs to the employing organisation. Projects give you more to talk about in an interview than a certificate line alone.
Is a TIH certificate recognised by UGC?
UGC does not specify certificate courses, so UGC recognition is not what gives it value. Its worth comes from the issuing hub and from what you learned.
The short version#
A TIH IIT certificate shows you finished a structured course at a government-funded hub. It does not stand in for an IIT degree, and it works best when your resume describes it exactly as it is. Check the issuer and the completion rules before you pay, then keep the projects you build ready to show.
